St Dwynwen’s Day

St Dwynwen's Day

History tells us that Dwynwen was the prettiest Daughter of King Brycheiniog, and she had fallen in love with Maelon. She was then heartbroken to discover that he had been promised to marry someone else, she ran away to the forest to grieve and pray to God to help her forget about Maelon. As Dwynwen fell asleep, an angel came to her in a dream and helped her forget by turning Maelon into ice.

Dwynwen was then given three wishes, she wished Maelon be thawed, she wished God would help all those in love to achieve their hopes and dreams and she vowed she’d never be married. In appreciation for her the wishes she dedicated her life to God and lived alone on Llanddwyn Island where she built a Church.

To this day people travel to Llanddwyn to visit her church and seek healing at her well, lovers across Wales now celebrate St Dwynwen’s Day on the 25th January. How about cooking your special someone a delicious meal to celebrate this year, we have many tasty recipes to choose from!
